The hotel night manager gets a bit defensive when we say that it is primarily immigrants that do night shifts, and that there are certain migrant groups over-represented in particular jobs, such as in the Latin-Americans in the cleaning industry: he insists that the night economy is mixed and ‘multicultural’. But yes, it happens that you ask somebody who is doing a good job in your business — let’s say a Romanian — to look around in his circle of friends and acquaintances and recommend some reliable people. If you have good experiences with that particular employee, you can trust the others to be good too. That’s how you get these clusters of employees from the same country, speaking the same language and working for the same boss.
